MILPA 2.0 is an 8-week boot camp on how to create mini-documentaries and use video, social media and other digital tools to address community issues and other transmedia campaigns.

Campaigns will include, mini-documentaries, social media information campaigns, videos to aid advocacy efforts with city officials, Public Service Announcements (PSAs) video blogs and podcasts.

Milpa is the Spanish word for a small plot of land generally cultivated with corn. Milpas are common in backyards and are key to providing sustenance and connecting to culture. MILPA 2.0 will utilize digital literacy and tablet video production to nourish cultural and community life, providing a tool for creating intergenerational cultural and social content.

MILPA 2.0 projects will be screened as part of the 13th OC Film Fiesta in October 2022.

MILPA 2.0 classes are free and open to the public, and registration is required. MASA invites participation from community groups working on community issues such as gentrification, police reform, housing inequality, LGBTQ youth, environmental injustice, systemic racism and cultural/social justice.

Instruction/production mentoring will be provided by award-winning Santa Ana artist and MASA co-founder Sandra “Pocha” Peña Sarmiento. Pocha has extensive experience in video production, and her career experience encompasses Spanish language network television, designing youth media arts programs, community advocacy and cultural activism. She received the Creative Capital award for the Dreamocracy in America project. MILPA 2.0 will also include special guest producers to provide professional instruction.
